New York quartet FOW led by songwriting duo Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood last bothered the UK charts with ‘Stacey’s Mom’ featuring a video that was a joy to watch. With fingers in your ears. And then only because of eye candy Rachel Hunter playing the mother of Stacey. Essentially FOW are a more irritating version of They Might Be Giants. Another band they’re inevitably compared to are Weezer. That’s harsh on Weezer who might well have tortured us with ‘Buddy Holly’ but salvaged their reputation with the genius of ‘Hash Pipe’. FOW clearly want to be as quirky as TMBG and Weezer, but their desperate attempts are plain embarrassing. If only FOW had limited their ambitions to playing college gigs in the US. That’s clearly their target audience. Listening to the chorus “I’ll have another glass of Mexican wine”, I’m disappointed that I haven’t got a bottle of said beverage to hand. Then I’d be able to drink to forget; to blot out the last three and a half minutes of my life. (0/5)
