Editors: Bullets (Kitchenware)
By Jonathan Waterlow
Monday, 26 September 2005
Editors are a band lacking a clear image; they’re not being marketed in a clever new way, and it’s all too plain for the discerning ear that they may be trundling merrily along on The Killers’ bandwagon.

However, taken on their own terms, Editors are still capable of some excellent tunes, which is the most important thing, if not any guarantee of sales figures. ‘Bullets’ has a pounding, hypnotic riff and memorable chorus. Finding yourself repeating “you don’t need this disease/you don’t, you don’t need this disease” under your breath unexpectedly is often disturbing, but proves the point that these guys are well worth a chance.

Taken from their debut album The Back Room, this new single moves Editors away from The Killers/The Bravery niche and more towards the eclectic pastures of Idlewild or even Joy Division back in the day. They understand how to build a song, exploit the grandiose and yet keep perspective at all times; Editors have something special going on, but until they emerge from their ‘back room’ it looks apt to remain a secret. ‘Bullets’ is a fine song, but it’s not going to take them anywhere as a single.
