N*E*R*D and Neptunes star and, indeed, the world’s dinkiest rap star, it seems Pharrell can do no wrong. Or at least until he wrote this piece of unremitting cack. From his forthcoming album, In My Mind, which is to be split into two distinctive parts: one hip-hop, the other R&B, ‘Can I Have it Like That’ should have everything going for it – it even features the endlessly bankable Gwen Stefani for God’s sake! And yet… oh and yet. There’s simply nothing approaching a tuneful hook here, and Gwen herself is reduced to saying “Yeah, you got it like that!” over and over again. The music is dull and goes nowhere, and the chorus more a distraction than the focus of the song.
Admittedly the lyrics hold some interest, as you’d hope from Pharrell, but in this context you simply cannot be arsed. Doubtless it will be more fun in a club with alcohol to cloud your better judgement, but without additives this is one sorry offering.
