Circus Normal: Circus Normal EP (Freeport)
By Jonathan Waterlow
Monday, 07 November 2005

So… any clue what the name means? No, me neither. It seems to have no logical reason or rhyme to it, so it can only be a matter of relief that the music underneath the big-top banner is far more comprehensible.

Bluesy guitar riffs and a confidence apparent in every stop-chord, this five-piece from Cardiff have been making music for a couple of years and, it seems, have already recorded a few albums’ worth of material. Which is somewhat worrying if this is the best they could put together – four tracks – from that much material. What we have here are inoffensive and moderately catchy songs, which fit easily into the indie-rock scene of the moment.

How to describe the sound? Like every random support band you’ve ever heard at a gig and never seen nor heard of since. Rather nice is probably the best you can come up with to praise them. It’s not bad, it’s just entirely forgettable. Good singer, good cohesive band…just songs which lack any immediate interest.

Their name may well be the most interesting thing about them. Shame.
