Eurythmics: BOXED (Sony/BMG)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 14 November 2005

Description:
A collectors’ deluxe boxed set of every album synth pop innovators Eurythmics have ever released. Each one has been digitally remastered by Mr Dave Stewart himself and on average each album features 4-7 bonus tracks, including one previously unreleased cover version.
Which means?
Eight albums from 1981’s debut In The Garden to 1999’s Peace. 1983 saw Stewart and Eurythmics partner Annie Lennox release two albums: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) and Touch. The boxed set is completed by the inclusion of Be Yourself Tonight from 1985, 1986’s Revenge, Savage from 1988 and 1989’s We Too Are One.
Is it much cop?
It’s Dempsey, Makepeace, Burnside, Regan and Carter. Rolled into one.
How many good tracks?
Thankfully, for the listening public, the good tracks go into double figures per album whilst the bad tracks remain in single figures for the entire boxed set. What’s not to like when you can hear classics such as 'The King and Queen of America', 'Right By Your Side', 'Would I Lie To You?', and 'Thorn In My Side'?
And the worst?
The cover of 'Satellite of Love', Lou Reed’s classic off 1972’s seminal Transformer album. Judging by the way Stewart and Lennox treat it, their rendition sounds more like ‘Satellite of Hate’. Murder most foul, indeed.
Biggest disappointment?
Some of the remixes are over-long and don’t add anything to the original. The normally reliable Coldcut let everybody down with their 'Love Is A Stranger' remix, for example. Truly, they deserve to be BOXED around the ears for their crime.
Verdict:
The perfect Christmas present for the Eurythmics fan in your life. And if that means you, don’t worry. Treat yourself anyway. The festive season is all about giving, isn’t it? Give yourself a well-deserved gift.
