Bob Marley & The Wailers: Africa Unite - The Singles Collection (Island)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 07 November 2005

Description:
"This year would have been Bob Marley's 60th birthday and to celebrate this landmark, Island Records will be releasing, Bob Marley & The Wailers: Africa Unite – The Singles Collection, a 20-track collection featuring all Bob Marley’s hits and more, and will also include a brand new previously unheard Marley song, 'Slogans', featuring Eric Clapton on guitar."
Which means?
The "hits" include ‘I Shot The Sheriff’, ‘Get Up, Stand Up’, ‘No Woman, No Cry’ and ‘Buffalo Soldier’. The "and more" refers to singles from Marley’s pre-Island JAD days, amongst them, ‘Soul Rebel’ and ‘Concrete Jungle’ along with a wil.i.am remix of ‘Africa Unite’ and Ashley Beedle’s reworking of ‘Stand Up Jamrock’. For further information, visit http://www.africaunite.com, which also features a competition to win a holiday to Jamaica.
Is it much cop?
Is the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley or Berhane Selassie, to give him the name he was baptised into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church months before his death in May 1981, not the king of reggae music?
How many good tracks?
20 out of 20. Apart from the tracks mentioned previously, there’s the anthemic ‘Exodus’, gorgeously, rather than sickly, sweet ‘Three Little Birds’, and ‘One Love/People Get Ready’. To name but just three.
And the worst?
20-20=0. Of that there can be no doubt.
Biggest disappointment?
That room wasn’t found for the simply wonderful and wonderfully simple ‘Redemption Song’. Or more from the original, and still the best, Bob Marley and the Wailers line-up’s last great album before they split up, African Herbsman.
Verdict:
The man, the legend, his music. What a legacy for fans new and old to enjoy.
(5/5)
