John Legend: Live at the House of Blues
By Nickta Hafezi
Monday, 05 December 2005

It’s quite surprising that John Legend has released a DVD with only one album under his belt. OK, so it was a massive hit and granted, he has the most wistful and rough-on-the-edges voice in soul, oh and not forgetting that he dabbles most delightfully in R&B, hop-hop and Motown, so I guess we can let this one go.

Recorded live in August 2005 at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, the set is small, the crowd is friendly and the music is heavenly. The backing singers could have pushed themselves a little more, but then again its Legend we want to hear. What an amazing voice and talent too – he takes about five minutes going through all of the tracks he has written for other artists and does a mean Alicia Keys impression. Such an amazing voice for a 23-year-old (No way!  That’s crap! – Ed). I can’t believe he’s younger than me!

The DVD special features are a bit limited, with only a ‘So High’ video and the making of it with some additional surround sound bits and bobs. Apart from that it makes for enjoyable viewing, especially the special appearances from Kanye West and Snoop Dogg. Just about all of the album tracks are performed, including my favourites ‘Live It Up’ and ‘I Can Change’, with Snoop.

There’s an interesting spin put on ‘Used To Love You’, introducing a reggae mix with Dawn Penn’s 1994 hit ‘You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)’, a twist that you may just have to listen to more than once plus there’s an unreleased track named ‘Again’, which leaves a little something to be desired, if his next album is going to be along the same lines…
