Joe Volk: Derwent Waters Saint (Invada)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 13 February 2006

On a recent edition of Jonathan Ross’ award-winning Radio 2 show, guest Stephen Fry asked the DJ how many new CDs he received each week. Now Wossy is hardly noted for breaking acts, certainly not on the par of a Steve Lamacq or a Zane Lowe, but the mispronouncing one nevertheless replied: "Too many." Before proceeding to rant in ever-amusing fashion about what it was like in the good, old days when there were fewer CDs and more quality.

Still receiving Bristolian Joe Volk’s debut solo album in the post must have put a smile on the face of old grumpy bollocks. Its warmth and rustic charm would shatter a heart of glass. Volk, replete with acoustic guitar, is very much folk-inclined but the leftfield production, similar to his contribution on Portishead bandmate Beth Gibbons’ and Rustin Man’s Out of Season, by Adrian Utley steers it away from a pastiche of John Martyn, one of Joe’s idols.

Joe Volk is also the lead vocalist of experimental stoner band Gonga, a group whose self-titled initial release in 2003 prompted the Observer’s Emma Warren to proclaim: "Time to admit defeat and bow down before the new monsters of heavy rock." The venerable All Music Guide brought its readers’ attention to "singer Joe Volk's unnervingly precise Kurt Cobain imitation." On Derwent Waters Saint, Martyn worship aside, Volk finds his own voice.

Not that what he sings is always easy to make out. I swear on opener ‘You, Running’ he declares: "In time I want to realign my nose." Now, a lyrics booklet would have prevented an impromptu game of Chinese Whispers.

If only all releases were of the calibre of Joe Volk’s. Then Jonathan Ross would have given a very different reply to Stephen Fry’s question. Instead of sighing "Too many" he would have exclaimed: "Not nearly enough."
