Monday, 30 January 2006 If he was still with us today, Jimi Hendrix would be the first to admit he was no saint. Yet if any musician deserves a hagiography, it’s gotta be Jimi. Joe Boyd’s 1973 authorized tribute originally released three years after the premature death of the virtuoso guitarists’ virtuoso guitarist sums up the cultural impact of Hendrix better than any newspaper obituary ever could.This rockumentary collates the finest footage spanning Hendrix’s entire career from his humble beginnings to the iconic Monterey and Isle of Wight performances, all digitally transferred and restored. Highlights include typically mesmeric renditions of ‘Hey Joe’ and ‘A Star Spangled Banner’. Alongside other fascinating interpretations such as ‘Johnny Be Good’. There’s also interviews with friends and musicians, from the hilariously camp Little Richard to the old-before-his-time Pete Townshend. Forget about Grange Hill and their ‘Just Say No’, Townshend’s Bagpuss-like eyes highlight the perils of drug use more clearly. Crystal (meth) clear at that. Special features range from a never-before-seen performance of ‘Stone Free’ from the July 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival, culled from the vaults of the Experience Hendrix estate to ‘From the Ukulele to the Strat’ – 60 minutes of bonus featurettes recalling Jimi boy. There’s also plenty of Hendrix talking, including his appearance on The Dick Cavett Show. You’ll have to turn up the volume for these segments as Jimi is so softly spoken you won’t be able to hear him. If anything there are too many talking heads. Hendrix’s music was always more interesting than Hendrix the man. Which is probably why the older Electric Ladyland album demands more repeat plays than this informative, though over-long, DVD.
