Let’s get this straight, according to Domino’s arcane band profile at least, The Beautiful New Born Children are a side project. Lead singer and guitarist Michael ordinarily tours with ambient electronica outfit Schneider TM as well as recording as Kpt.Michi.Gan and as one half of Superb Reverb. Wife Kirsten plays bass, alongside former River Phenix (sic) bandmate Per Nyhus, a "guitarist masquerading as a drummer (who)...also plays in a well-known electro-pop group."
Information which the WorldWideWeb seems, the details on Michael (as it turns out Beckett), an Englishman based in Germany, suspiciously oblivious to. Meanwhile, Lorenz, a "bassist masquerading as a guitarist...designs lace patterns for women’s undergarments." Of course he does, Domino, of course he does.
There’s a Strokesian feel to most of the tracks despite (or maybe even because) the band hail not from New York but from Berlin. Where they differ from Casablancas and co is the production. Beckett’s band make The Strokes sound as polished as The Sugababes. Michael himself appears to be singing through mud. Unsurprisingly the unsolicited 9-track demo which attracted Domino’s attention was recorded in Beckett’s cellar. Note cellar, not garage - a word that Michael admits to detesting.
What to believe? The bit about the musicians playing different instruments to the ones they’re accustomed to certainly appears to be true as there’s a delightful Langley-School-Project amateurism to the whole venture. Now if the press release had revealed that Michael had receiving singing lessons from The Hives’ Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist my eyelids would have remained unbatted as their vocals aren’t entirely dissimilar.
Sensibly clocking in at just under 23 minutes as any more of this raw-like-the-rarest-steak rock and roll and you’ll be suffering from sensory overload, this debuts excites like sex. Already tipped by many to be the breakthrough act of 2006, Michael, Kirsten, Per and Lorenz might have to give up their day jobs. If, as it turns out, they have day jobs to give up. (4/5)
