Want who? Me or the bottle? No, don’t worry, it’s not plea to stop using addictive substances. It’s a simple but effective rock plea not to give up on love.
The first single from Placebo’s forthcoming album Meds, is apparently indicative of all else that is on the album. Recorded in eight weeks in London, this eagerly awaited album will be the band’s first original release since 2004’s Sleeping with Ghosts. And there’s nothing to complain about.
It’s sheer Placebo standard rock with a twist of joyous pop and a cherry on top, a candyfloss made of barbed wire, if you like. Very reminiscent of the Placebo’s early work, but nevertheless the single is something to be proud of. The catchy bridge, sung in true Molko style (“Don’t give up on the dream; on the wanting”) and the simple chorus grip right from the inside and carry the whole track. The same successful ingredients have been brought together again for our listening pleasure and for the band’s ultimate success.
It really is a sign of talent (OK, and maybe luck) that the band can still produce such high quality tracks after 10 years together. If you are a true Placebo fan or consider yourself a fellow MTV-generation rocker, then you will surely appreciate this track and in addition, the instrumental version, also on the CD. After this taster, I can hardly wait for the album.
