Description: The 16th in Ministry’s popular Sessions, legendary Puerto-Rican born but Chicago-bred DJ Sneak, real name Carlos Sosa, assumes control of the mixing seat variously occupied by other dance music behemoths, the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Frankie Knuckles and Todd Terry. The Sosa family left the Greater Antilles for the Windy City when young Carlos was 13 years old. Speaking no English, he acquired the Sneak moniker from his days as a graffiti artist – a lifestyle which provided an entry point into the world of Chicago house music. Which means?
Two discs, 30 tracks, of the hardest house known to man.
Is it much cop? It’s Judge Dredd. The movie, 21st century version. Remade with Vin Diesel replacing Sylvester Stallone in the title role.
How many good tracks?
So proficient a mixer is the fast-fingered Sosa that songs bleed into one another like clothes washed on the wrong cycle. The Freakwashousefunkthank mix of Justin Martin and Sammy D’s ‘Swap Thing’ stands out. If only for its name.
And the worst? D.O.N.S’ take on Technotronic’s classic ‘Pump Up The Jam’. It’s neither big nor clever. Sometimes it’s best to leave the hell alone.
Biggest disappointment? Discovering that Sneaks’ Sessions dates don’t take in Las Palmas. This is a guy who threatens to catch fire at any moment. Surely with his digit-to-vinyl friction, spontaneous combustion is a probability rather than a possibility.
Verdict: Put your hand in your pocket and splash some cash. Pump up the bass on your speakers. Enjoy your very own Ministry of Sound from the comfort of your living room.
