The Scientists are still relative newcomers to the UK music scene; however, after releasing their first LP With Love and Squalor and the lavished attention of the NME, the Scientists have managed to grab us by the scruff of the neck and show us exactly what we should be listening to.
In the sweaty confines of a packed out Astoria, W.a.S. open their straight-to-the-point set with ‘This Scene is Dead,' in which an extended intro brings much anticipation to the hyperactive crowd. Not since the likes of Idlewild (when they were good) has the British rock scene heard chunky riffs laden with effortlessly thoughtful lyrics: W.a.S are bloody fantastic. There is no doubt that the singles ‘Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt' and ‘It's a Hit' get the most crowd recognition tonight, the former being accompanied by a mini boxing match as seen in the video. Other highlights include the dark, new song ‘Surprise' and the sensitive ‘Textbook,' which manage to spread goose-bumps, even in a hole like the Astoria.
The show came to a spectacular close with The Ronette's classic ‘Be My Baby' and the explosive ‘The Great Escape,' during which singer, Keith Murray, dived into the crowd and support act, ¡Forward Russia!'s Whiskas, ran onstage to take over the guitar duties. Look, in short, everyone must see We Are Scientists whenever and wherever possible, by nook or by crook! (5/5) Check for Live Dates |
