Ever get the feeling that good bands can be likened to buses? You know, like when none seem to arrive for ages, and then – as if to spite you – loads come at once.
The UK is packing a massive punch in 2004 with some truly astounding 'alternative' pop-rock outfits, and here's another in this Bristol quintet, fronted by Rupert Browne.
Sublimely fusing good old guitar riffs with funky synths and ethereal vocals to die for, this band – just like this laid-back yet scandalously catchy anthem in 'Ether Radio' itself – is cool.
All five band members experienced hugely different upbringings, and drummer Steve Bond has even turned his back on a career designing Formula One racing cars in favour of making a go of it as a musician. Guitarist Ed East, meanwhile, has skipped away from his military upbringing, and is brining any discipline he was taught as a child into the art of being strict with himself and as a result some of his guitar melodies are exquisite in their lush originality.
Operating from their DIY recording studio, their magnificently poppy electro-rock sounds are impossible to ignore, as not one but two keyboardist players add the robust sounds of synths a-go-go to startling effect.
Naturally, this will hopefully be a radio station play-list favourite for years to come. Once heard, you'll be hooked. (4/5)
