Christ on a bike (and I hope that isn't blasphemous), this year’s Eurovision Song Contest held in Athens on 20 May had a rather rude awakening – Finland’s freakish looking Lordi stormed to victory and there wasn’t a pair of Lycra hot pants in sight either.
Quite what possessed them to challenge the emphatically camp singing contest is a mystery (unless they qualified on stage costumes alone), but the gamble paid off – not to mention the painstaking hours spent sitting in make-up. ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’ merges your worst nightmares of naff Euro-rock together in one melting pot. Think Europe, Hanoi Rocks…just substitute the wild mullets for some extras off Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ video and this growling anthem just lashes out in all directions.
It’s about as hardcore as Robbie is with rap, but it ticks all the boxes for a fun and catchy record that made it a winner and annihilated all its rivals. Honestly, this one is a scream. How many songs have the word 'arockalypse' in it? (4/5)
