The Holiday Plan: Stories/Sunshine (Island)
By Steve Rudd
Thursday, 10 June 2004

These guys may have released one or two incredible EPs since late 2003, but this quality double a-side release is actually the lads' first single proper, and released just two days after their debut festival performance at the almighty Download festival no less.

And fair's fair.  This is the best example, to press, of The Holiday Plan's incredible songwriting skills and high-octane pop-punk-rock levels that have been wowing audiences across the land, given the fact that they always seem to be touring, and having recently rocked the UK along with Reuben.

Both 'Stories' and the glorious arse-kicking accompanying tune 'Sunshine' are classic 'once heard, loved for ever' type anthems, anchored by firm punk beats, grease-lightning guitar work and truly sensational choruses that couldn't be catchier if they wanted to be.

Matt Rider on lead vocals genuinely has a fantastic and distinctive voice, while Blue Quinn and Gary Jenkins on guitar duties rip up some marvellously melodic riffs - and that's where much of this band's strength lies: in the ability to consistently produce music that is both easy to mosh to and that is mature and melodic enough to really sit back and listen to. Indeed, this single is actually first aural evidence of the band's newest material, more of which will surface in Autumn '04 with the release of their debut album that they've recorded in New Jersey.

Having also played at America's SXSW festival and alongside Thrice and Brand New on tour, THP blast out with a similar inspirational and feel-good verve as Californian pop-punk-rockers Yellowcard. Now that would be nice if Yellowcard and The Holiday Plan could get onto the same touring bill as each other.

I'll be honest: I LOVE The Holiday Plan. And if you knew what was good for you, so would you.
(5/5)
