Jim Noir @ Cardiff Barfly, Cardiff
By Simon Hoyle
Thursday, 25 May 2006

It’s nice to know that given the present UK music scene, currently preoccupied with the latest rock band that sounds like all the others, someone is still looking out for us few who crave something sparky, something with a certain je ne sais quoi. This someone is Jim Noir, and thank God he turned up.

At tonight’s Barfly performance Jim and band show off their uber cute tunes from the critically acclaimed debut album Tower of Love. So thoroughly likeable are Jim’s ditties that the new adidas track, the endearing ‘Eany Meany’, initiates a keen crowd singalong. The boys not only underline their previous success, but also demonstrate how damn excellent the harmony-packed Tower of Love really is.

Jim’s success is largely due to the simplicity of tracks like ‘Key of C’ and the ‘Computer Song’, to which everyone can relate to, as well as their poppy beats and beeps. In addition to the fact that the Beach-Boys-esque vocals and adorable plinky-plonky/bleepy-bleepy sounds are so instantly likeable, the band also easily charms the Cardiff crowd with their laddish banter and cheeky grins, ahhh.

Flanked by garden gnomes (of various sizes), Jim and the boys reel out every one of their future hits, and by the time their number 65 hit ‘My Patch’ makes an appearance the whole crowd has joined in, even after the band have finished and want to bugger off home. This surely must be the start of Jim Noir’s iconic indie-dance status.
