Hiding Place: (What If) The Truth Looks Clearer Empty (Vertigo)
By Steve Rudd
Thursday, 10 June 2004

Don't by shy, come out to play. There are exciting fresh rock sounds in this Hiding Place.  Even if the song title is reminiscent of Mclusky's tact for incorporating tongue-twisting wordplay into the naming of their tunes, Hiding Place is a quintet - who have supported InMe, Slipknot and This Girl – that sledge-hammers out top-notch emo rock'n'roll.

With the dual-pronged attack of twin brothers David and Derek Somerville on all guitar duties accompanying the versatile and distinctive voice of band frontman Paul McCallion, they're not afraid of showing their more sensitive sides either, as evidenced by a tender and elegant musical lull within the song, that all the time remains vibrant and somewhat reminiscent of Faith No More.

Some of the band members were raised on a diet of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, and the ambitious verve of the guitar riffs does echo the epic scale of their heroes, but Hiding Place are pioneering a rock sound all their own, as they tend to thematically reflect on their upbringing in the East Kilbride area of Scotland to an acute extent in their songs.

Since their late-teens, when the band was essentially conceived, they have come a long way. If only they revealed, in no uncertain terms, what exactly would be the result of the truth being easier to comprehend if non-existent.  We can only wonder.
