Robots in Disguise: Get Rid! (President)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 03 July 2006

A sandwich only satisfies your stomach’s demands in the short term. Because it releases sugar into your bloodstream far too quickly, it offers a quick-fix hunger solution. Consequently, health fascists denounce the sandwich as insubstantial, a belly-teaser if you like.

Meet Robots In Disguise, sandwiches (if ever there were) of the music word. Comprising Dee Plume, as in nom de plume, on guitar and Sue Denim, as in pseudonym, on bass, the girls share vocal duties. The result is pure saccharine, providing a rush when you listen to the CD but ultimately leaving you wanting more.

Get Rid!
follows on from where the faux automatons, live performances see Dee and Sue introduce songs in monotone robot fashion, left off with 2004’s self-titled debut. Again produced by Sneaker Pimps/I Am X’s Chris Corner, it’s electroclash lite. If you want to know RID’s influences, they name-check them in opener ‘Turn It Up’, a former Steve Lamacq single of the week no less. 'Ashes to Ashes' is an obvious Bowie reference whilst 'Teaches of Peaches' is even more explicit, being as it is the name of Merrill Nisker’s first solo outing.
Robots In Disguise have appeared on The Mighty Boosh’s TV show and tour. Funny girls, their lyrics to dancefloor-friendly ‘The DJ’s Got A Gun’, “everyone put your hands in the air and get down on the floor”,  certainly raises a smile. The sultry ‘Hot Gossip’, which the duo practically pant along to, raises something else altogether.

Dr Gillian McKeith would probably advise against it, but if you’re soon hungry after a plate of sandwiches there is an option available to you: have another one. And another one after that. Get Rid! deserves to be treated the same way, consumed again and again.
