Quadrophenia - Special Edition (18)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 07 August 2006

Quadrophenia, director Franc Roddam’s 1979 feature-length debut, remains one of life’s great viewing pleasures. And not just for the humiliation, spoiler alert, of Ace Face/Bell Boy as played by Sting. Although if someone could arrange a similar real-life humbling of the erstwhile Police frontman, that would be well worth watching too.

Based on The Who’s 1973 rock opera of the same name, the cinematic version saw Pete “Quadrophenia is My Generation writ large”

Townshend pen several additional tracks for the soundtrack. Centring on the experiences of a disaffected young Londoner Jimmy (Phil Daniels) who becomes a mod to allay the boredom, the film narrates his clan’s battle with fellow youth cult, the rockers.

Featuring a fit-and-she-knows-it Leslie Ash as the love interest, a far cry from the sorry state of the actress today, Quadrophenia also stars Toyah Wilcox, Mark Wingett, John Altman, and Brighton. The south coast resort is the destination of choice for a amphetamine-fuelled lost weekend. Pills and thrills aplenty.

This special-edition two-disc DVD features a digitally remastered widescreen picture and a brand-new stereo audio track. There’s also a retrospective documentary, A Way Of Life: Making Quadrophenia. Along with On Location with Franc which sees Roddam revisit several of the locations used in the film and audio commentary with Roddam, Daniels, and Ash.

If you have never seen Quadrophenia, don’t delay, buy it today. If you have, you’ll find you’re going to watch this version again. And again and again.
