Jurassic 5: Feedback (Interscope)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 24 July 2006

And then really there were five. Following the departure of pioneering turntablist Cut Chemist who’s decided to concentrate on his solo career, Jurassic 5 now number DJ Nu-Mark and MCs Akil, Chali 2na, he of the rumble-in-your-tummy baritone, Mark7, and the artist formely known as Soup, Zaakir.  It’s a leaner, meaner J5 in more ways than one.

For Feedback finds the LA collective at their most commercially-attuned. Zaakir talks about his dissatisfaction about being labelled “a backpacker group” and calls his band’s fourth album “a step up”. Nu-Mark thinks along similar lines, revealing: “We grew up listening to Run-D.M.C., P.E., Tribe, everybody you can think of on the radio, and we want to be on the radio.”

To that end, whilst Nu-Mark produced most of the album, the band also called on the by-no-means-cheap-nor-particularly-credible services of Scott Storch (Eminem, 50 Cent, and Lil’ Kim) and Salaam Remi (Nas, Fugees, and Joss Stone). Such an avaricious approach reaches its nadir on ‘Work It Out’ featuring Dave Matthews. Whilst a recent shared tour may explain this collaboration, it barely justifies it with Matthews’ half-assed vocals bursting the balloons of the 5’s party anthem.

Yet an old-school feel to Jurassic 5’s recordings prevails. As they claim on ‘What’s Golden’ from last album Power in Numbers they continue to take “it back to the days of yes- ya'llin.” Consequently, they often appear to be performing a hip-hop hoedown a la Whose Line Is It Any Way?

Nowadays they may be “hustling for your money”, but you could never accuse Jurassic 5 of selling out. Few rap groups treat their fans to a 27-song 90-minute gig as Nu-Mark and the four MCs did on their recent tour, for a start. The feedback therefore remains positive.
