Boys, isn’t it about time you regrew that goatee? Girls, how about revisiting that Bride-of-Dracula look? For the nu metal revival is amongst us.
The unlikely standard bearers of the genre’s return are Weapons, formerly Weapons of Mass Belief/W.O:M.B. It was under their former name that they recorded the limited-release single, ‘Death of a Nation’. Although not quite limited-release for some’s liking.
The sideways-glancing Slashmusic for one who responded to the single in typically biting fashion: “Or as one of us immediately shouted: “Weapons of Mass Turbation!” Mumblings were heard about this band probably having “tattoos” and “minute cocks.” Or as one of us succinctly put it: “This is fucking wank.””
Slashmusic made the mistake of assuming the band were all male. There’s the nympho drummer (big Leslie-Phillips-style “Hello” to Tash) for starters. There’s also rapper/singer Georgia Griffiths, younger sister of 2004’s great surprise success story, Jem.
Another Griffiths, Justin also sings/raps along with “multi-lingual South African from the tropic of Capricorn” Mo-laudi who in addition, appropriately enough, stage-dives. Blond bombshell bassist Pete and Blair, a Gordon-Ramsey-schooled chef no less, on guitar complete the line-up.
The band rarely strays from the nu-metal template. The exceptions are on ‘The Thieves’ featuring Jem which sounds not unlike Jem’s own ‘They’ and album closer ‘Out of Time’ which recalls vintage Depeche Mode. Boys and girls, I give you Weapons: the acceptable face (especially in the case of Tash and Georgia) of nu metal. (3˝/5)
