Blackbud @ Islington Academy, London
By Matthew Hirtes
Thursday, 05 October 2006

I have friends who avoid Oxford Street at all costs. Now whilst I like to think they’re engaged in some kind of anti-capitalist protest my shopaholic tendencies prevent me from joining them in, their motives for boycotting the area are altogether different. They’re simply avoiding the chuggers, the same charity muggers that inspire me to be as much a misanthrope as Scrooge. Played by Larry David.

It’s a good thing, then, that none of these friends take me up on my offer of accompanying me to Bradford-on-Avon classic rock trio Blackbud’s headlining set. For then there would really have been blood on the dancefloor. As Islington Academy’s narrow confines begin to resemble chugger-bugger Oxford Street.

On three separate occasions I’m asked by three different individuals to add my name to the Black Bud mailing list. On three separate occasions I give a different name and email address. Only kidding Blackbud street team, but whilst your hard-working activities earn you plenty of signatures, it also detracts from Blackbud’s show.

And what a show it is. The dirty three channel Kentucky’s My Morning Jacket, an epic performance given their West Country roots. Initially they appear to be without a lead singer as their set kicks off with an extended jam, but then guitarist Joe Taylor assumes centre stage, ably supported, though, on the vocal front by bassist Adam Newton and Sam Nadel on drums.

Signed to the UK’s major independent label, Independiente, Blackbud have already played Glastonbury. I’d like to see them do so again. But this time without the unwanted hangers-on: I prefer to enjoy a shot of Blackbud undisturbed.
