Hot Chip @ Anson Rooms, Bristol
By Simon Hoyle
Monday, 09 October 2006

Mercury Music prize leftovers, Hot Chip manage to mesmerise the Anson Rooms' occupants tonight, although they sure manage to make the crowd work for their supper. Re-released single, 'Over and Over' is actually a good description of what you get from a Hot Chip headlining show: constant, unvarying, electronic pips and hoots.

A third of the way through the set the geeks can see that the audience are hungry for their best thing going, 'Over and Over', and make a promise to play it and play it they do, but right at the end of their aeons-long set. By the time the kids get ready to bop around to Hot Chip's re-release its past their bedtime.

The majority of their set, taken from this year's The Warning, borders on the edge of tiresome. Most tracks start off with a bag of balls only to end up, after what feels like hours, with a tepid crowd response. Others like 'Boy From School' don't even begin to lift off the ground. The fact that the Hot Chip lads seem to be stapled behind their keyboard barricade only adds to the deadlock.

'Over and Over' is only a slight relief from the changeless beeps and beats and although the stomper track is welcome, the crowd have no qualms about rushing out when the last parp has been parped.
