Methodist Centre, Bolt Action Five & Lost Penguin @ Camden Barfly, London
By Kate Picard
Saturday, 09 September 2006

Tonight the cosy Barfly hosts three bands with little output, but reasonably-sized online followings, considering their relative obscurity.

After dodging from one side of the venue to the other to avoid a group of beered-up idiots, we are greeted by Methodist Centre, consisting of a guitarist and a perhaps over-generous two drummers. Their punk style may be full of energy, but it is so safe and boring that I’m bored after a couple of songs and find myself wishing them off. A trip to the bar fits in nicely at this point.

After borrowing a pen from a member of Bolt Action Five to deface the crisp t-shirt of one of the lipstick indie boys mentioned earlier, it’s time for more music.

Bolt Action Five have far more presence, with a somewhat cocky singer and electro-bleeps a-plenty. Some of the crowd weren’t sure what to make of the in-between “Yeah, bitch!” banter, but I liked them. How could I not like a band with a song called ‘Tree Friend Tree Foe’, about one of my favourite Children’s ITV programmes, Knightmare? Nasty!

By the time Lost Penguin take to the stage, singer Kerry has been dancing in a self-absorbed manner all evening amongst her bandmates, demure Matt and Kevin Bassett, and electro-pal, Dave i.d. Frankly, Kerry was wrecked. The thinned-out crowd looked bemused as L.P. careered from one song to another, knocking over keyboards and falling on their arses. It was bloody great! Recent single ‘Mr. Whippy’ (yes it is about an ice-cream man) was great, but the rest, for me as well as L.P. I’m sure, is a bit of a blur.
