While Dave Grohl stepped out from behind Nirvana’s drum stool to front one of the biggest commercial rock bands around (Foo Fighters), his friend and touring partner Josh Homme has gone from fronting stoner rock gods Queens of the Stone Age to playing a more anonymous second fiddle in his own side project – not only is he relegated to the drums, but he goes by the name Baby Duck.
The name Eagles of Death Metal is hardly an accurate description either. One story has it that their aim was to sound like The Eagles (of ‘Hotel California’ fame) crossed with death metal, but Deicide this band certainly are not – instead they play a slightly-bluesy stoner rock with a sleazy, glam element not unlike Monster Magnet circa Powertrip, only more tongue-in-cheek. This, the second single from Death by Sexy, continues the aim to put more cock in your rock with its paean to a hot young girl.
Certainly a respectable example of the garage rock genre, alongside the likes of The Backyard Babies or Hellacopters, I can’t help think Homme could produce this in his sleep, and wish he’d devote a bit more time to some of his more credible projects. Then again, he’s involved in just about everything to come out of his scene, so you can hardly begrudge the man a break, and if this is his way of letting his hair down then so be it.
