Record companies, eh? As Philip Larkin more famously said of “your mum and dad”, they fuck you up. Following a contretemps with their Island Records about where the band were going, Jackson Analogue decided “rather than hang about for anymore dirty talk” they would record their new single after setting up a new label.
The result is I Hear Voices and ‘Come On’. The sound’s filthier than if the amps were caked in excrement. Unsurprisingly the Isle of Wight quintet recently headlined Howdy Do?, “an evening of traditional and untraditional Americana, country, folk & blues tunes”.
Island’s loss is, erm, I Hear Voices’ gain. Jackson Analogue are as irresistible, to this listener at any rate, as the “blueberry thighs” vocalist Rob Homes hoarily extols. Despite what those wise guys at Pitchfork would say about “fake authenticity”, as long as young pups like Jackson Analogue are about to keep the faith, rock and roll will never die. (3¾/5) |
