First single lifted from their third album, Because of the Times, ‘On Call’ sees the Kings of Leon doing something slightly different from their now common garage-country-folk-rock kind of thing. An ode to devotion, ‘On Call’ is initiated with an enchanting intro which breaks immediately into a Kim Deal-esque bassline. The repetitive, mantra-like nature of the single draws you closer to the charm of the Kings’ lyrics. Where ‘Molly’s Chambers’ and ‘The Bucket’ were full-on rockers, ‘On Call’ is positively hypnotic, and will no doubt be a summer festival anthem of 2007. Even beyond the simmering intro ‘On Call’ maintains its mesmerising trip with Caleb Followill’s haunting vocals in the sonic driving seat. This single is hopefully a positive sign of things to come from their third album, and have prevented the already established Kings becoming stale – time to welcome back the Kings of Leon. (4/5)
