Vocalist Inara George's the bird, and not just because she's female. The daughter of legendary Little Feat frontman Lowell George sings with all the abandon of one of our feathered friends in flight. Jazz pianist/keyboard player, and producer, Greg Kurstin’s the bee, providing the buzzy accompaniment to George’s soaring voice.
Members of the Silver Lake scene, emanating from a residential area of LA noted for its creative-minded individuals, the duo actually met when George recorded ‘All Rise’ at Kurstin’s Echo Studios in 2005. Entertainment Weekly lavished praise on “a sun-kissed solo debut wrapped in a cocoon of inviting acoustic guitars and shimmering synths”. For The Bird and Bee’s first album, the duo have ditched the guitars but retained the synthesizers.
The result is an eclectic blend of bossa nova, electronica, and pure pop. The 10 songs you’ll hear on their debut remain the only 10 tracks George and Kurstin have recorded. So, they’ve taken to singing covers on tour including ‘Do you Know the Way to San Jose?” which is indicative of their sound and ‘How Deep is your Love?, which is anything but.
The track, though, that’s stolen all their attention in blogosphere is ‘F-cking Boyfriend’. A cheeky ditty that’s seen Inara sing in the specific direction of one guy at concerts before following up with ‘I’m a Broken Heart’ when the subject of her attention embarrassingly refuses to be her new beau. As with the other eight songs on the album, these two tracks represent party time for your ears.
Everybody’s talking about The Bird and the Bee. Common consensus suggests they create “audible sunshine”. Looks like summer’s come early this year.
