OutKast: Roses (Arista/BMG)
By Afsheen Shaikh
Thursday, 10 June 2004
OutKast have barely been absent, especially with ‘Hey Ya’ jamming the Top 10 for four months alone, so with Big Boi and Andre 3000’s splitting their music into Speakerboxxx/The Love Below respectively and with the pair releasing a single each off their solo projects, like its name, third single ‘Roses’ beautifully entwines the two.

The outcome (or should that be ‘outkome’?) is in the form of Big Boi dropping a sizzling hip-hop verse into Dre’s 70s inspired dollop of funk and soul, pushing the boundaries of hip-hop to a challenging and thought-provoking level.  As always with OutKast.

Aptly put to a tale about one stuck-up bitch, the chorus alone is a sweet scent with sarcasm superbly expressed and as always, a fantastic video to boot.

With the duo supposedly going off in different directions (BB delving further into his music and Dre securing roles in films), their desires have not got in the way of delivering something that is far from a steaming slab of shit.  So good, it’ll knock you out.
