Calvin Harris: The Girls (EMI)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 14 May 2007

Calvin Harris, a 23-year-old erstwhile shelfstacker at M&S from Dumfries rips off both Groove Armada’s ‘I See You Baby’ and the entire back catalogue of Slick Rick on the second single from his yet-to-be released album, I Created Disco. And how do the former repay such cheek? Only by remixing the track, a version which finds its way on to this release, along with a dub interpretation.

A bedroom DJ, Harris relies on a trusty old Amiga to create his trademark sound. Yet so unsure is he of his mixing ability, Harris performs live with with a mike in hand rather than a pair of headphones. That hasn’t stopped Kylie Minogue employing him to work on her latest album, nor Groove Armada asking Harris to remaster their forthcoming single, ‘Get Down’.

The young Scot had previously sent countless demos to record companies in the hope of getting signed. When all that proved fruitless, Harris turned to the web, where he caught the attention of a top producer who passed on his details to Ms Minogue. Clearly the try-try-and-try-again ethos of Robert the Bruce is alive and well in Scotland.
