The Bird and the Bee are better known to their friends as singer Inara George and musician/producer Greg Kurstin – don’t ask me if they’re the bird and the bee respectively, or if it’s simply a stage name. Apparently they describe themselves as “psychedelic Burt Bacharach”, which makes it a shame that I haven’t heard their live cover of ‘Do You Know The Way To San Jose’, which is included as a b-side on the 7” vinyl version of this single.
‘Again And Again’, the opening track of their self-titled album, is itself an interesting prospect at first. A quirky lo-fi indie/jazz combination, George’s vocals are quite pleasant, but despite its summery sound and dark lyrics the song lacks much in depth and is just a bit too repetitive (again and again and again and again, in fact…). It holds your interest the first few times, but ultimately it’s rather bland. Inoffensive, but not something I want to listen to again and again really.
