 Description:
Number four of this Paris-based band/fashion house/record label’s series of electro-tinged compilations finds Kitsuné in band-breaking mode once more. Where previous releases featured the likes of Hot Chip and Klaxons, this one includes Brighton’s soon-to-be darlings of the indie music world, Foals, and shouty grindie youths from Leeds, Hadouken! Exclamation mark, artist’s own; but in the circumstances, entirely appropriate.
Which means?
Everything an album launch at the hipper-than-thou Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen implies. Kitsuné remain one step ahead of the zeitgeist. This is is the music those outside the environs of N1 will be enjoying next.
Is it much cop?
You at the back! Yes, you! Have you not been paying attention? It seems not. OK, I’ll spell it out in capital letters for you then: YES, IT IS.
How many good tracks?
Presumably 13 isn’t considered unlucky in France. For every one of this baker’s dozen is a fantastic listen. A big shout must go out, though, to Boys Noize who add backbone to Feist’s recent whimsy, ‘My Moon My Man’ with their “classic mix”. And the worst?
It’s not bad, as such, but opener ‘Be My Friend’ by Darkel isn’t that indicative of the rest of the album. The side project of JB Dunckel, one half of Air, comes across as a tribute to Jean-Michael Jarre. All well and good, mon ami, but, like a supermodel in a supermarket, rather out of place.
Biggest disappointment?
The cool reaction displayed to Kitsuné in its home country. As label boss, and Daft Punk producer, Gildas Loaëc explained in a recent interview: “We’re doing 95% of our business outside of France. And outside of Paris we’re not really selling any records.” Get with the beat, les Françaises.
Verdict:
Kitsuné have got the look. As well as wearing them this season, you can also hear them. The very definition of très chic. (4½/5) |
