Ben (John Krasinski) and Sadie (Mandy Moore) are engaged and can’t wait to start their life together as a married couple.
Sadie’s parents are an example to be followed, Sadie is the best girlfriend you could find and Ben, well Ben is just a droop. He doesn’t do much but follow orders and get bossed around. The only stipulation is Sadie always wanted to get married in St Augustine’s Church where her parents tied the knot and that’s where Reverend Frank’s rigorous curriculum comes in. The couple cannot marry until they pass the Reverend’s patented “fool-proof” marriage prep course.
Right from the start it’s soppy and drippy, so it’s predictably not long before the couple go through trip up on some disasters. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bitter. It’s just that much soppiness is too much to stomach.
It’s only when wacky Reverend Frank (Robin Williams) enters with his dodgy innuendos, intimacy chats and perverse tactics, that the film picks up. He has some funny lines and really this is a prime vehicle for his sarcasm and perverse humour but Williams doesn’t really shine as much as you would expect him to.
It’s a light-hearted comedy with the expected ending but it lacks in character development and the plot skips heavily. This ought to be jilted.
