Honeyroot are Heaven 17 (yes, they are still going) vocalist Glenn Gregory and DJ Keith Lowndes who used to tour with The Human League. They sound like neither band. Nor are they particularly reminiscent of The Magic Skulls, the techno project the duo formed with Martin Fry back in 1995.
No, Honeyroot are far more redolent of Eskimo, which just happens to be the moniker the pair use to score music for television and film. Gregory himself explains how commissions like these are a “good starting point for a Honeyroot track because it´s more ambient.” “Honeyroot is very filmic basically,” he sums up.
There´s also shades of Morcheeba, particularly in the way Honeyroot detach the chill-out tag ascribed to them by collaborating with artists from other genres. Where Morcheeba called upon the services of Slick Rick and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner, Honeyroot turn to the likes of country singer Kim Richey and Briony Greenhill of experimental folk collective, Fireworks Night. With the result they expand rather than limit their music.
