If, as the title suggests, Gretchen Lieberum existed in Ancient Greece, she’d have lulled many a sailor to a watery grave. Possessing a voice that’s quietly, yet at the same time strongly, persuasive, listeners are mere putty in her hands. As are songs – both hers and those of others.
There are two cover versions on Siren Songs, the LA-based songstress’s third album. The first is The Flaming Lips ‘Do You Realize’ which one reviewer liked because it was finally “in hands of someone who can actually sing” rather than the self-confessed tone-deaf Wayne Coyne. The second is Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ which sees the trip-hoppy Lieberum pay homage to the genre’s founders.
The album has been freely available in the States for a couple of years now. All the more reason to see what the rest of the world has been missing out on. However, it’s probably wise not to listen to Siren Songs while doing anything important (erm, like sailing a boat), so diverting are Lieberum’s vocals.
