The Kooks @ Doncaster Dome
By Ryan Lee
Friday, 17 August 2007

When I was a kid, the Doncaster Dome looked cool and futuristic. Now it’s as modern and stylish as a 60s sci-fi movie. I'm unsure as to what to expect from the Kooks who have selected the Dome as their choice of venue. God bless them, they have some catchy tunes but apart from that, I don't know much about the lads other than frontman Luke Pritchard got his dirty little hands on Katie Melua. A friend assured me they're a great live band, so I enter the hall with an open mind.

Well, fuck me! They're terrible and not just a bit terrible, SO terrible that a pregnant woman standing near me went into labour or faked it. I kid you not! Paramedics rush in and a look of relief washes over her.

I only realise the second song kicks in from the silent gap in between otherwise all the songs sound exactly the same. By the third song the crowd are chanting, "You're shit, you're shit" Why be funny, when you can be accurate?

I hear of all 10 seconds of the fourth song before I grab my companion and head for the door. The ticket tout offered us a fiver each for the tickets on the way in. I now know how generous that man was being. I could justify and give precise feedback as to why they were so bad on a technical level and a performance level, but frankly I will waste no more time on this band.
