Description: Domino don’t do films, but if they did they would be some of the most darkly enjoyable movies out there. Films like Hallam Foe, described by The Daily Telegraph as “an odd and very appealing story.” The eponymous Foe, played by Jamie Bell, is a voyeur who develops an Oedipal complex at a relatively advanced age following the death of his mother. Which means? Director David McKenzie collaborated with Domino’s Laurence Bell and Jaqui Rice. Comprising music from Domino’s back catalogue, with the exception of Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Hallam Foe Dandelion Blow’ which was recorded with the film especially in mind, this OST is edgy, Kafkaesque, and taut, everything you associate with Domino, in fact. Is it much cop? Following Hallam Foe’s world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, David McKenzie walked off with the Independent Jury Prize for best film. Along with the Silver Bear Bear award in recognition of the soundtrack. How many good tracks? Sixteen out of sixteen. King Creosote’s heart-stoppingly beautiful ‘The Someone Else’ and Clinic’s claustrophobic ‘If You Could Read Your Mind’ are the pick, though, of a mighty fine bunch. And the worst? Sixteen out of sixteen good tracks means there’s not a bad track to be found. Biggest disappointment? That Domino don’t soundtrack more movies. Verdict: Have you seen Hallam Foe? If so, you’ll want to hear this. If not, what are you waiting for? (4½/5) |
