Q: What do high-flying TV executive Dawn Airey, Danish comedian and author Sandi Toksvig, and emerging singer-songwriter Simon Mastrantone have in common? A: Nothing much, apart from the fact they all studied at Girton College, Cambridge. Mastrantone himself shares rather more similarities with artists such as Jamie T, Jack Penate, and Jeremy Warmsley, all acts he’s played alongside.
Indeed Warmsley, who runs the “21st Century Cabaret” Songs in the Dark night at Farringdon’s Betsey Trotwood with Mastrantone, best nails his friend’s sound when he describes it as “a cross between Jeff Buckley, Kate Bush, and children crying; all his songs are about sex, death, his family, and haunted houses.” Listen to this double-A side comprising a prologue and epilogue, available on 7” vinyl, and you’ll see exactly what Warmsley means.
