Freestylers: A Different Story Vol.1: Mixed by the Freestylers (Concept)
By Helen Shipley
Monday, 03 September 2007

The dance floor breakers are back...apparently.  And they’ve decided to celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a mix album charting the history of break-beat.  Moving through the 80s, 90s and through to the present day Freestylers have mixed together their favourite tracks with some of their own samples, accapellas and production.

As a casual dance music listener I wasn’t much impressed. There’s no innovation, no spark and where was this Freestyler ‘twist’ the press release promised?  I could have been listening to any old dance album.  IOnly one track stands out and that’s their mix of Cameo’s ‘Word Up’ but even then it barely sparked more than a passing “that’s interesting”. To put it another way, it didn’t occur to me to reach for the rewind button.  In fact just a few hours later I can barely remember how it went.
