On their fifth album, it’s quite easy to picture London tech-house duo’s Swayzak soc. Its capital is Macchu Picchu, its flora, the tropical rain forest of the Amazon Basin, and its mountains, the Andes. You’ve got it: it’s Peru, only without the pan pipes.
Swayzak are James Taylor and David “Brun” Brown. By day, Taylor runs the 240 Volts label and records his own material using his own name, and that of the Darkfather pseudonym. By night, Brown plays with percussionist Francesco Brini as Swayzak and DJ Roger 23 as Swayzak Soundsystem.
Together, they’re the sun gods of the dance music world. As Brun concedes, “We’re more interested in atmosphere.” Consequently, “the album is darker and heavier – a reaction to all that minimal stuff that has become a type of mainstream.” Not in Peru, it hasn’t.
