Description: Last year, Mr Zoe Ball released Why Try Harder: the Greatest Hits. Now comes this, a remix version of the choicest cuts. Except where the former spanned one disc and 18 tracks, this year’s model boasts two CDs and 21 tracks. Which means? Whilst WTH included Cook’s remixes of Cornershop and Groove Armada, TGHR focuses on his original compositions. And so it features remixes from Fatboy’s peers aka “the list of heavyweights given the nod to fuck with Norm’s originals”, the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Justice, Timo Maas, and Switch. Along with a bonus track on CD01, ‘Kidboy’s Fatboy Bouillabaisse’. Is it much cop? Yea, and nay. Despite the wide array of remixers, often the extended length of each track makes for a more monotonous listen than the pared-down originals. Unless you’re hearing these reworkings in a club environment, of course. How many good tracks? More than half, but less than three-quarters. The Chemical Brothers make ‘Song For Shelter’ sound suspiciously like Calvin Harris’ ‘Girls’. Which, but of course, is a good thing. And the worst? Dave Clarke’s remix of ‘Retox’. Just what was going through the thought processes of the Baron of Techno when he monkeyed about with this number is anybody’s guess. You’ll need a stiff drink to forget this dirge. Biggest disappointment? Wot no ‘Going Out of My Head’? Verdict: They were invited to “fuck with Norm’s originals”. No-one fucked him over. With the possible exception of Dave Clarke. (3¾/5) |
