Disproving the notion that novelty records only come out at Christmas, Liverpool’s Wombats also shatter the illusion, with a sledgehammer, that such tracks are, by definition, garbage. Sure, the tune’s as naff as anything ordinarily released over the festive period. But with the genius inclusion of a children’s choir, no, not St. Winifreds, plus evidence of a indie-tinged pop sensibility, The Wombats show why they’ve become the new favourite band of one of their home city’s favourite sons, Paul McCartney.
