Jill Scott: The Real Thing - Words & Sounds Vol 3
By Nickta Hafezi
Monday, 08 October 2007

The Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter is back with her third album with a little help from some notorious producers/artists.  Described as grittier, sassier and a juicier follow-up to her second album, Scott’s come up trumps with an assortment of upbeat and slower ballads – a blend of jazz, R&B and hip-hop, infused to make her very distinct ‘neo-soul’.

Opener ‘Let It Be’ is a zestful taster before the more rock-influenced title track kicks in.  The guitars and lustful verses are just what you need onto hear when lying in the bath on a Sunday night with a glass of wine.  Another favourite is ‘Hate On Me’, a sassy riposte that will get even the stiffest limbs moving while ‘Come See Me’ is a classic soulful track inspired by Marvin Gaye-esque melodies.  He slow ballads ‘How It Make You Feel?’ and ‘Wanna Be Loved’ stand out for their evocative and inspiring flavour, even though in the latter Scott sounds like the flavourless Janet Jackson. Finally, ‘Insomnia’’s chronic bass and beautiful lyrics arouse the senses and get those feet tapping.

Every track is gifted with its distinct and sensuous individuality and the luscious spicy mélange of this collection will entice you.
