Guru’s Jazzmatazz: The Mixtape: Back To The Future (Rapster)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 14 January 2008

Description:
Apparently, aka so it says here, “Guru’s Jazzmatazz Back To The Future Mix CD is the “raw” companion to the Jazzmatazz Vol. 4 album”. That record, Guru’s Jazzmatazz Vol.4 The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: “Back To The Future”, to give its full title, came out last June. To predictable acclaim at BBC 6 Music, the radio station of choice for the worthy muso, where it was acclaimed Album of The Day.
Which means?
You need no look further for the perfect present for the worthy muso in your life. Guru, as any worthy muso would tell you, was the lyrical half of Gang Starr. Here the MC hooks up with, amongst others, producer Solar and the compilation’s host, DJ Doo Woop.
Is it much cop?
Someone call 911. This shit needs some serious investigation. Sorry, came over all Westwood there.
How many good tracks?
When you already possess the pulling power to attract the talents of Common, Lord Tariq, and Mr. Lif, you’ve not got a lot to worry about. As a result, Guru is on cruise control for the duration of this album. Which nevertheless includes a near-show-stealing performance from Londoner Yungun on ‘Too Slick’.
And the worst?
Recalling A Tribe Called Quest on ‘Knowledge’, good. Soul2Soul on the title track, erm, not so clever. Even if means reminding the world how great a vocalist Caron Wheeler remains.
Biggest disappointment?
That projects such as this look like keeping Gang Starr on hiatus. Their last original album was released in 2003. Yes, five long, lonely years ago.
Verdict:
Like jazz? Like hip-hop? You’ll just love this then.
