Monday, 21 January 2008 Description:For those of you who don’t read cover-note smallprint: bands sample. And French house pioneers Daft Punk have lifted breaks and riffs more often than they’ve had hors d’Oeuvres. Indeed, Monsieurs Bangalter and de Homem-Christo have been helping themselves to a wide-ranging selection of delicacies for the whole of their 15 years of existence. Which means? Their samples are worth a compilation of their very own. Or so the good people at Rapster Records think. And who are we to argue with a label boasting the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Pete Rock, and Roy Ayers on their roster. Is it much cop? It is. And then some. Have I made myself clear? How many good tracks? Twelve out of twelve. A music snob might sneer at the inclusion of Chaka Khan and Sister Sledge. Although their near-smile would be wiped off their face by the realization they hadn’t actually heard of Khan’s ‘Fate’, used on Stardust’s ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ nor SS’s ‘Il Macquillage Lady’, as sampled on ‘Aerodynamic’. And the worst? Move along, people. There’s nothing to see here. Of that you can be sure. Biggest disappointment? That I needed Daft Punk to discover these samples for me. I got over it. As will you. Verdict: There have been more crucial discoveries. None spring to mind while you’re listening to this collection, though. Music certainly sounds better with them. (4/5) |
