Description: Island Records MD Chris Blackwell founded Compass Point Studios in The Bahamas in 1977. AC/DC would record their epic Back in Black there three years later, followed by the likes of The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, and Robert Palmer. Not that you know from listening to this compilation of the recording studio’s early days. Which means? Funky Nassau homes in on the more experimental rock artists, think Tom Tom Club, Talking Heads, and Ian Dury, “eager to inject their sound with some Nassau magic”. As the press release puts it. The alchemy came by way of producers Sly and Robbie, engineers Steven Stanley and Alex Sadkin, and the Compass Point All-Stars house band. Is it much cop? Babylon. Beast. Call it what you want. How many good tracks? Jah knows, everything on this album is I rey. Or, for the benefit of the non-patois speaker, Lord knows, everything is mighty fine. Especially the lesser-known cuts by French DJ Guy Cuevas, Slits-side project Set The Tone, and dirty disco diva, Cristina. And the worst? We all love a 12”. But with tracks averaging over five minutes anyway, does this compilation really require two of them? It’s a rhetorical question. Biggest disappointment? Realizing that nothing you will ever do will come close to the sheer proliferation of Sly and Robbie. It’s estimated that they have played on or produced some 200,000 songs. Way to go, fellahs. Verdict: Compass Point 1980-1986: a time and a place. And one other thing. A state of mind. (4¼/5) |
