Carl Craig: Sessions (Universal)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 03 March 2008

Description:
He’ll turn 40 next year, but legendary producer, remixer, DJ and record-label owner Carl Craig has been making music since he was 17 years old. Which means he was able to draw on a hell of a back catalogue when it came to compiling this career retrospective. From ambient to jazz futurism to soulful techno, it’s all here.
Which means?
Sessions consists of a double-mix CD. Taking in early recordings under the aliases Paperclip People and 69 to dancefloor smashes such as ‘Throw’, recently covered live by LCD Soundsystem. Along with the track that arguably created drum and bass: ‘Bug in the Bassbin’.
Is it much cop?
Carl’s Detroit. He’s techno. But Craig’s no fan of parochialism, dancing, as he does, to a world beat.
How many good tracks?
Everything and anything. All and sundry. For the purpose of singling something out, you’ll discover exactly why his reworking of Junior Boys’ ‘Like A Child’ earned him a Grammy nomination.
And the worst?
Some of the songs, especially on the second disc, could, if played loud enough, probably elicit blood from your ears. But, as any techno head worth their salt knows, that’s more observation than criticism. For the uninitiated, though, this is an album which should be spread out over a number of listens.
Biggest disappointment?
That I’ve discovered Carl Craig so late in life. It’s catch-up time. Hence this CD has found itself on heavy rotation on the Casa Hirtes stereo.
Verdict:
He’s been a busy boy. Yet it’s all killer and no filler. So, CC’s Music Factory looks like being in business a while yet.
