Four Tet: Ringer (Domino)
By Matthew Hirtes
Monday, 21 April 2008

He’s come to play with your head again. Has aural scientist Kieren Hebden. As this Four Tet mini album, over the course of 32 minutes and four tracks, shows what Can could but many imitators can’t.

Opening title track ‘Ringer’ is as monotonous as a ringtone, but weirdly doesn’t irritate. In spite of being 10 minutes and four seconds long. More diverse is the second song, ‘Ribbons’, which owes a debt to Timbaland.

For as Hebden once revealed, “Producers like Timbaland got me exploring; looking for new types of sounds and instruments to combine in the music I was making.” On to his sixth album, one feels that Four Tet will increasingly be cited as an influence himself. For music doesn’t get much more inspiring than this.
