Royworld formed in 2006 when songwriting brothers Rod and Crispin Futrille stuck an advert up on the Goldsmiths College notice board. Keyboardist Tim Miles and drummer Gerry Morgan responded, with Miles’ friend, Rob Parkin later completing the line-up on guitar. But there aren’t five in the band when they tour or record as Crispin plays Bernie Taupin to Rod’s Elton John.
Apart from the Daft Punk-meets-Aqualung ‘Astronaut’, replete with vocoder, most of this debut album can be attributed to an appreciation of the music of the ‘70s and ‘80s. The likes of Roxy Music and Talking Heads. Along with that of Fleetwood Mac and Queen too.
Royworld can’t seem to leave their academic past behind them, having recently completed an acoustic tour of British libraries. The last band of note to have been formed at university were, of course, Coldplay. Now, whatever became of them?
